Offaly man's stunning photo chosen for Dublin exhibition

An Offaly man's photo has been selected to feature as part of the 2023 Reach for the Stars astrophotography outdoor exhibition run by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS).

The photo, entitled 'Night Train', was taken by Tom O'Hanlon from Tullamore.

It was captured in Lough Boora and depicts the Milky Way core rising over the Sky Train sculpture at Lough Boora Discovery Park.

A setting crescent moon illuminates the foreground, and the astro-modified camera captures the detail of the Milky Way hydrogen-alpha signal.

Tom O'Hanlon's image is being showcased as part of an outdoor exhibition at DIAS's premises at 10 Burlington Road, Dublin, from tomorrow (Wednesday).

It was one of 15 top-rated images from the competition, which attracted over 70 entries.

Michael McCreary, President of the Irish Astronomical Society and a member of the judging panel, said: "Astrophotography competitions are a great way to reconnect the general public to the night sky, capturing their imaginations with these stunning astrophotographs.

"Joining a local astronomy club or society is a great way to get involved and there are lots of groups around the country."

The top-rated images in the Reach for the Stars competition will be available to view as part of an outdoor exhibition, from tomorrow, Wednesday, which will hang at the railings of DIAS's premises at 10 Burlington Road, Dublin.

The winning images are all available to view online at: www.reachforthestars.ie.
