Tang and Tubberclair appoint new football managers
Both Tang and neighbours Tubberclair will be under new management for the 2024 season.
Tang have announced the appointment of former Leitrim defender Seamus Quinn as their senior football manager.
Quinn was recently ratified at a meeting of the club's executive committee, and he succeeds Tubber man Keith Higgins, who guided Tang to an impressive showing in the 2023 Westmeath SFC, winning four out of their five group games. Keith, whose father Kevin died early last month and who recently got married, stepped down from the role for personal reasons.
Quinn is one of just two All-Star winners from Leitrim, the other being Mickey Quinn, and Seamus is a former manager of Roscommon club Elphin. Seamus, who lives in Co. Longford, is also a former manager of the Leitrim junior team.
Tang will compete in Section A of the Westmeath SFC in 2024, alongside St Loman's Mullingar, Coralstown/Kinnegad, Caulry, Athlone and Tyrrellspass.
Meanwhile, Tubberclair have appointed club insider Daniel Sammon as their new manager. He will be assisted by former Tubberclair and Westmeath goalkeeper Gary Connaughton, Paul Madden (a Mayo native living in Glasson) and Danny Sammon (Daniel's father).
The new manager succeeds Martin McCabe, who stepped down after the conclusion of the 2023 season. McCabe led Tubberclair to the 2022 Westmeath intermediate football final which they lost to Shandonagh after a replay. In 2023, the men in green and gold were edged out by eventual champions St Malachy's at the semi-final stage.
McCabe is changing his focus to manage the Tubberclair U-18s in 2024 as this age grade returns to the Westmeath landscape.
Tubberclair won the 2022 U-17 Division 1 championship and came very close to retaining their crown last year, losing the final to Mullingar Shamrocks in a replay. Therefore, there is clearly plenty of young talent coming through the ranks.
