Sinn Féin candidate urges residents to have their say on the future development of Monksland

A Sinn Féin candidate in South Roscommon is urging people to actively participate in the Westmeath & Roscommon County Council Athlone Joint Urban Area Plan by making a submission on the future of Monksland.

Drum's Joe Harney says it is “absolutely essential” that all residents take the time to contribute to the success of the initiative by making their views known by 5pm on Thursday, February 1.

In terms of empowering the vibrant community in Monksland, Mr Harney stresses: “Today, the power to sculpt Monksland's future lies in the hands of everyone within its community.”

Delving into the demographic fabric, the survey of residents conducted from April 2017 to October 2018 reveals a community predominantly composed of working-age individuals, with 66% aged between 26 and 45, according to the election candidate.

“Noteworthy is the housing landscape where 58% of respondents are renters, underlining the need to address concerns such as affordability and tenure security in the upcoming urban action plan.

“Monksland residents take pride in their community, with an overwhelming 93% expressing enjoyment in living here. However, the survey illuminates’ areas for improvement – only 47% find satisfaction in community activities, and 39% in community facilities. Uniting against challenges, the call for enhanced awareness and opportunities echoes through the report,” Mr Harney from Taylorstown adds.

Boasting a well-educated population, Monksland faces a call to action for the 25% unemployed. Despite high connectivity (97% with computers and 99% with internet access), there's a surprising lack of awareness about available education and training options in the survey results, Mr Harney continues. The report also emphasises the need for accessible and well-publicized community activities for youth.

Under the community recreation heading, the survey had recommendations in relation to the the development of a community green area with playgrounds, football pitches, astroturf, skateboard rink, astroturf pitches, walking tracks and supermarkets.

Other recommendations by residents in the report include the development of social clubs, a drop-in centre, a modern community centre, a Monksland college campus, youth clubs and after-school programmes.

“Now is the moment for Monksland residents to lend their voices and shape the destiny of their community. Submissions are not just words; they are the building blocks of a vibrant, thriving Monksland,” the Sinn Féin candidate in South Roscommon is urging.
