Athlone to be hit by further water restrictions

Irish Water said a number of areas in and around Athlone town will be hit by restrictions to their water supply this evening (Thursday) and into tomorrow morning.

Customers are likely to be affected in Athlone town, Annagh, Baylin, Mount Temple, and Ories in order to allow water levels in reservoirs to refill.

The water restrictions will come into effect at 8pm this evening and are due to continue until 8am tomorrow morning.

In a statement, Irish Water said that due to the "extremely cold weather conditions and exceptionally high water demand," some treatment plants in Westmeath were struggling to keep up with supply demands.

All customers are being asked to conserve water to avoid reservoirs emptying and water pressure to homes and businesses being affected.

Irish Water said it was working in partnership with Westmeath County Council and it acknowledged the hardship and inconvenience this is causing people.
