They lucky pair bought the scratch card at the Spar store in Collins Avenue, Dublin 9, while enroute to Dublin airport last week.
“It’s just incredible,” said Athlone mother, Teresa Kiely, as she collected the prize-winning cheque.
“We were obviously very excited about going on a well-deserved break and we said we’d have a little bit of fun with a scratch card before we left.

“We couldn’t believe it at first but when we got to Spain, we called the National Lottery and they confirmed the win, it was absolutely brilliant! "For the first time ever, we actually didn’t mind coming home, knowing that we’d be collecting such a large prize as soon as we landed,” the Athlone woman joked of their good fortune in National Lottery Headquarters before they headed home with their winnings.
It is one of the biggest scratch card wins in the Athlone area in recent times.
