The late Gareth Kelly

Athlone IT fundraising for family of man stabbed to death in Dublin

The father of a man stabbed to death in Dublin earlier this week is a current student of Athlone IT.

Fr Shay Casey, the chaplain at the local institute, has organised a fundraising effort to help with the funeral costs for the late Gareth Kelly (39).

Mr Kelly was stabbed to death early on Tuesday morning while he was working on the engine of his car at Brownsbarn Estate, in Kingswood, Co Dublin. A 38-year-old woman has since been charged with his murder.

Fr Shay explained that Mr Kelly's father, James Kelly, is in third year in Athlone IT, where he is studying a computer-based course.

James is a native of Dublin who is retired from the Air Corps and went back to education after moving to Longford seven years ago.

The death of James' son was described as "terribly tragic" by Fr Shay, who was asked by James if he could organise some fundraising to help the family with the funeral costs. A Go Fund Me page has since been set up for this purpose.

"His funeral will probably be next week. We'll be at that, and then when James comes back we'll probably hold a memorial service here (in AIT)," said Fr Shay.
