Westmeath Independent Sports Awards taking place tonight

The Shamrock Lodge Hotel is the venue for the Westmeath Independent Sports Awards this evening (Friday) as we honour talented local sportspeople for their achievements over the course of 2018.

Twelve monthly award winners will be formally presented with their awards at the event, which is set to begin at 7.30pm. The identity of the readers' choice winner and the overall sports star of the year winner will be revealed on the night. 

In addition, Athlone IT lecturer Clement Higginbotham will be presented with this year's 'Hall of Fame' award in recognition of his commitment to the development of tennis, and indeed sport in general, in Athlone and surrounding areas.  

Robbie Irwin, known for his work as a sports broadcaster with RTE Radio One, will again host the awards function.  

The Westmeath Independent Sports Awards are organised in conjunction with main sponsors the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, supported by associate sponsors Action Physio and Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors.

May: Moate CS U-14 ladies football team

June: Paddy McDonnell (Swimming/Endurance Sport)

July: Conor Glennon (Golf)

August: Darragh Murray (Rugby)

September: Kayleigh Shine & Katelyn Keogh (Soccer)

October: Donie Shine (Gaelic Football)

November: Kyle Conway (Soccer)

December: Brian O'Hara Duggan & Tommy Coogan (Basketball)
