Major traffic calming works in Glasson village are due to start next month, according to Westmeath County Council.

The part 8 planning process was approved and seconded by Cllrs Mark Cooney and Gabrielle McFadden at Monday's council meeting.

Director of Services Michael Connelly confirmed that work would begin "next month or so" and conclude after "about a month".

The works will include the erection of traffic calming gateways on each approach to the village and the erection of new 60km speed limit signs. The scheme provides for the erection of three sets of gateway type signs on each approach with 50km speed limit signs. The work also includes the extension of public lighting and the erection of a pelican-type pedestrian crossing.

Earlier last week, at a meeting of the Athlone Area Committee of Westmeath County Council, Director of Services Barry Kehoe confirmed that work would start very quickly as money was available this year from the National Roads Authority for the project.

He said the work could cost "the bulk of €300,000" and part of the project would be carried out by direct labour and partly by contractors.
