One of Athlone's secondary schools is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
St Aloysius College, which opened in 1951, is holding a past pupils open day on Sunday May 8, in celebration of the last five decades of education on the west side of Athlone.
Past pupils, former staff and friends to the college are being encouraged to come along to the day of celebration and memories.
Mass will be celebrated in Ss Peter and Paul's Church at 12 noon on May 8, to celebrate the college's 50 years in education and give thanks for the lives and successes of St Aloysius' past-pupils. It will also remember deceased past-pupils and staff.
Mass will be followed at 1pm by a reception in the school itself. Past pupils of all years will have the opportunity to meet up with old friends, familiar faces and teachers. A nostalgic walk through the old house, school yard and new school is bound to bring memories flooding back. Refreshments will also be served as part of what staff plan to be a very enjoyable and nostalgic evening.
Meanwhile, a commemorative book celebrating the 50 years of St Aloysius College in the town is currently being written and published.
The school urgently requires photographs and memorabilia associated with the school, particularly from the earlier days and if anyone can help, they should contact the school.
If you have any questions about the event or any part of the celebration do not hesitate to call.
