In excess of 100 homes have had to be evacuated in the Athlone area after it was hit by record levels of flooding over the last week.

Over 50 houses were flooded in Athlone town, while at least as many were affected in rural areas on its outskirts and in parts of South Roscommon.

Councils in Athlone and Roscommon implemented emergency measures to deal with the crisis, rehousing a number of residents in hotels, B&Bs and apartments.

In one of the local rescue operations the Army provided assistance in rehousing a 90-year-old woman from the Carrickobrien area on Sunday, while 13 people had to be removed from their flooded homes in Carricknaughten, Clonown, that evening.

In Athlone, the Town Council said this week that Parnell Square, Burgess Park, Deerpark Road, the Canal Walk, Iona Villas, the Docks, Clonown Road and Accommodation Road were among the areas worst affected by the current flooding on the west side, while The Strand, Wolfe Tone Terrace, Carrickobrien, Clonbonny, Ballygowlan, Portlick and Muckanagh were most impacted on the eastern side of the bridge.

Major flooding incidents occurred in Athlone in 1915, 1925, 1954 and 2000, but Waterways Ireland said that the water levels this week were significantly higher than anything previously recorded in the area.

WHAT HAVE THE COUNCIL DONE SINCE 1954 & 2000? ON THE WEST SIDE THE COUNCIL GAVE PLANNING PERMISSION TO DEVELOPERS TO BUILD COUNCIL HOUSES ON A FLOOD PLAIN, AND FURTHER GAVE DEVELOPERS PLANNING PERMISSION TO BUILD PRIVATE HOUSES ON A FLOOD PLAIN ON THE CLONOWN ROAD,DESPITE OBJECTIONS FROM THE RESIDENTS IN THE AREA. THE COUNCIL CLOSED THE Canal TO ACCOMMADATE THE TENANTS OF THE COUNCIL HOUSES,AGAIN DESPITE OBJECTIONS, THUS THIS AREA WILL FLOOD AS THERE IS NOWHERE FOR THE WATER TO GO. IM SURE THE COUNCIL MEMBERS AND CHAIRPERSONS DO NOT LIVE IN THE AREA. THE COUNCIL SHOULD OPEN UP ITS BOOKS TO THE RESIDENTS, REGARDING THE ABOVE PROJECT, AS THERE ARE SOME RUMOURS THAT ENGINEERS ADVISED AGAINST IT. SOME PREVENTIVE WORK SHOULD BE DONE, THAT MAY MEAN OPENING THE Canal, DEMOLISHING THE HOUSES SORTING OUT THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM, & AS FAR AS I KNOW THE RESIDENTS OF THE PARK RECEIVED NO HELP FROM THE COUNCIL. THERE IS NO POINT IN TROTTING OUT THE GLOBAL WARMING GAMBIT, THE SHANNON IS NOT MONITORED SAFELY, THE LOUGHS ARE KEPT AT A HIGH LEVEL, AND NO DRAINAGE IS DONE, DESPITE COUNCIL MEMBERS GETTING WELL PAID FROM THE PUBLIC PURSE, THEY SEEM TO BE UNABLE TO GET ON TOP OF THEIR JOBS. COUNCILS WITH AN INTEREST IN THEIR COMMUNITY ARE NOT WAITING FOR DISASTERS TO HAPPEN, THEY PREVENT THEM FROM HAPPENING, AND DO THEIR UTMOST TO ENSURE THIS. WHO IN THE COUNCIL APPROACHED CENTRAL GOVERNMENT FOR FUNDS FOR THIS.
