Irishtown area evacuated

Two suspect devices were found at two head shops in the Irishtown area of Athlone this morning.

When the two shops were opened for business this morning a device was found in each one.

Gardai evacuated the area and called in an Army Bomb Disposal Team, which made save the devices.

Seán Costello Street, Mardyke Street and John Broderick Street were evacuated for two hours.

An Army spokesman said they were "two improvised explosive devices".

They were removed from the shops and taken away for examination.

An Army Bomb Disposal Officer deemed them viable and the remains of the devices have been handed over to the Gardai for their investigation.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with any information to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 6498551.
