Sewerage finishes, two years later

Almost two years behind deadline, work on the Glasson/Ballykeeran/Coosan sewerage scheme is expected to be finally completed in the middle of June.
Householders in the area using septic tanks are being encouraged to connect to the new mains sewerage system by a special discount offer.
Westmeath County Council confirmed last week that it would be offering a once-off connection fee of €200 to domestic users up to six months from the date of commissioning of the system.
Those who sign up between six months and a year will be charged €816, while the full cost of connection (€1,711) will be levied from then on.
Senior water services engineer Greg Duggan said the council would be contacting everyone in the area with information on connecting to the system.
He explained everyone along the route of the scheme had a connection laid to their gate, even where planning permission had been granted but not yet utilised.
He added that the fee to non-domestic users had not yet been agreed. Cllr Mark Cooney sought a discount for these customers too.
