The Middleton Park House Hotel in Castletown Geoghegan

Westmeath hotel on the market at €950,000

A Victorian-era Westmeath hotel has been put on the market with a guide price of close to a million euro.

The Middleton Park House Hotel in Castletown Geoghegan is being offered for sale as a going concern and property consultants Savills are guiding a price of €950,000.

The regency style period mansion was built by British Architect George Papworth around 1850. It is most famous for one of its previous owners, Barney Curley, a well-known horse trainer who in 1986 sold 2,000 tickets in a lottery with the house as first prize.

The current owners purchased the property in 2004 and set about converting it to a hotel, through modernisation of services and specialist renovation works true to the original construction methods.

The property itself sits amidst approx. 26 acres of gardens and woodland and is hidden from public view at the end of a long avenue over 1km in length.

Noteworthy features include a cantilevered staircase, spacious entrance hall and a restored period conservatory. Middleton Park House consists of the Main house, The Bell Tower Wing and the Chapel Wing. Accommodation is laid out on ground, first and lower ground floor levels.

Its country setting and elegant banqueting facilities make it a popular wedding venue – and around 80 weddings took place there last year. The main banqueting hall caters for up to 200 people; in addition guests can enjoy use of the 4 large reception rooms, bar and a games room.

The property can accommodate up to 50 guests in the existing 16 en-suite bedrooms consisting of 4 luxury suites and 12 standard bedrooms. Savills said there was potential to add an extra 10 bedrooms, subject to planning.

Commenting on the sale, Aaron Spring of Savills said: “This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a successfully trading business with a strong booking pipeline. The hotel a magnificent property in close proximity to a large population base, is a unique wedding venue with obvious appeal and offers purchasers the potential to grow the business further.”
