20th anniversary of a famous day at st mels park

Today, April 23, marks the 20th anniversary of a memorable day at St Mel's Park when Athlone Town FC foiled title-chasing Derry City on the last day of the League of Ireland season.

Singer Phil Coulter, whose son Ryan later went on to play for Athlone Town, was among the candystripes' large travelling support who came to Athlone knowing that a win would secure them the league title.

However Athlone, who were already consigned to a relegation play-off, didn't read the script.

Donal Golden put the locals in front with a memorable goal after just 13 seconds.

Derry's legendary striker Liam Coyle scored a terrific equaliser, but heroics from Athlone goalie Shane Curran, including a penalty save, ensured that the game ended level and that Dundalk lifted the title.

This report from RTE, despite the grainy picture quality, captures some of the drama of that day.
