Legendary sporting icon of athlone passes away

The death has occurred of Jackie Quinn, at his home in Moydrum earlier today.

Jackie was a renowed figure in the football world of the midlands and west.

A former Athlone Town FC manager and player, he was assistant manager to Turlough O'Connor when Athlone first won the League of Ireland in 1981.

Jackie played with his local club from the B Division through to the first team, which he captained. He also played with Sligo Rovers before becoming Athlone Town's manager in 1973.

He has been credited in helping to develop the side, which was then guided into Europe - and a famous clash with AC Milan, shortly afterwards by Amby Fogarty.

He also led the Athlone RTC to success as manager.

Jackie passed away unexpectedly at his home in Blyry Lower, Moydrum.

He is sadly missed by his loving wife Joan, son Dermot, daughter Elizabeth-Ann, daughter-in-law Margarette, grandchildren Adrie and Saoirse, brothers, sister, In-law's, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends

Reposing at his residence on Friday from 3pm until 9pm, with requiem mass on Saturday in St Mary's Church at 10.30am with burial afterwards in Coosan Cemetery. House private on Saturday morning.
