Two classrooms in Athlone school flooded

Two classrooms in St Aloysius College in Athlone have flooded, while four other rooms are in danger.
That’s according to the school’s principal Gearóid Ó Conámha who said this week that the situation is “quite serious”.
“The skirting is off the wall. I don’t even know if we are covered by insurance,” he said.
The two affected rooms are located in the school’s basement and are a foot under water. The same rooms were also flooded in 2009 and were subsequently renovated extensively.
Water is close to the entrance of the other four rooms, while the yard inside the back gate of the school is flooded.
“There are pumps going at the moment. We are hoping for the best. The rest of the school is fine,” said Mr Ó Conámha.
He said that despite the flooding in the two rooms, the school re-opened on Wednesday, as planned. The classes that were due to take place in the two rooms - Geography and Religion - are being accommodated elsewhere in the school building.
The car park is out of commission but parking will be available on the all-weather pitch.
“Only for the flood barriers the other four rooms would be flooded by now,” he added.
