Anonymous GAA supporter's kind gesture to Westmeath's Ray Connellan

It seemed like more than just rotten luck when Ray Connellan sustained a horrific injury just before half time in the Westmeath v Dublin Leinster final.

Dublin went on to win their fifth consecutive Leinster title, and the road to recovery was only beginning for Connellan.

Due to travel to the 'land down under' in September to take part in the Australian Rules League, he had sustained two breaks above his ankle, as well as ligament damage and two days after the match, Ray underwent surgery at the Santry Clinic, that involved the insertion of two plates into his leg.

One spectator in Croke Park on the day watched all this happen and decided to set a good example by contributing a small donation to Connellan's recovery.

Not wishing to be named, and not knowing how to reach Connellan, the mystery GAA fan penned a letter to Ben Dolan, brother of the late Joe, who he was sitting close to in the stands on the day of the final.

'Dear Ben, you don't know me but I was sitting close to you in Croke Park...I would appreciate it if you could do me a favour,' he began.

'The young man who was injured sustaining a leg fracture...' and went on to say how he hoped that his future wasn't affect.

So impressed was the spectator that he offered a small contribution to his recovery.

He simply signed it 'Thanking you in anticipation, a GAA supporter,' before adding, 'Trying to set an example.'

The anonymous benefactor succeeded in raising the spirits of young Connellan who posted the letter on his social media account along with a photo stating 'The road to recovery starts now'.
