Garda warning over popular shoplifting tactic

RETAILERS in Athlone are being urged to watch out for the presence of shoplifters who are carrying foil-lined bags in an effort to scupper security checks in shops.

A number of retailers in the county have reported the circulation of the foil bags, the aim of which is to negate security scanners, meaning that items are stolen from shops without the alarms activating.

Crime Prevention Officer in the Westmeath Garda Division Sergeant John Connolly said retailers should, where possible, employ security personnel in the run-up to Christmas, at a time when shoplifting peaks.

“We do have evidence of some professional shoplifters using foil-lined bags. Retailers need to keep an eye out for it. I would ask retailers to be sure the barriers at the doors of shops are working.”

He added: “Retailers should approach potential shoplifters early. This will normally prevent the crime. Gardaí should be contacted early. It is possible there may be a garda patrol near your shop.”

Gardai have increased patrols in towns across the county and this will continue up until Christmas.
“Extra uniform members and plain clothes gardaí visit shops and car parks,” he said.

Thefts in retail car parks is also problematic during the busy shopping season. Gardaí say thqat incidents are most common on Tuesdays and Fridays, between 12 noon and 6pm.

The average value taken per theft is around €600, while the most common items taken include cash, electronic goods, tools and handbags.
