Buccaneers and Athlone region mourns passing of Billy Henshaw

By Michael Silke

It was with heavy hearts that the news of the death at the great age of 97 of Billy Henshaw Snr filtered through to Buccaneers Rugby Football Club on the feast day of the Assumption.

Billy’s passing following so soon after that of his beloved Bridie last April leaves a massive void in the Henshaw clan, a family so synonymous with the Athlone club. It robs the region of a super character, a wonderful musician and raconteur.

This writer fondly recalls Billy being interviewed by Scott Quinnell for Sky Sports during the last Lions tour when, with tongue in cheek, he reckoned his grandson Robbie would have won loads of medals at the Fleadh had he concentrated on music rather than rugby!

Indeed he had a special bond with Ireland star Robbie who valued his grandad’s opinion, advice and encouragement. Both grandparents had a special table reserved in The Bounty for many of Robbie’s big matches.

Billy will be dearly missed by his family, sons Tony, Davie, Billy and Mark (who all played for the club) and daughters Mary, Sadie, Concepta and Lorraine, and all the wider family and friends.

Heartfelt condolences are extended to all the family. May they take comfort in having both parents, now reunited, for so long. Rest in peace Billy.

Billy Henshaw of Hillquarter, Coosan, Athlone, Co. Westmeath died peacefully on Tuesday, August 15. Predeceased by his beloved wife Bridie, Billy will be sadly missed by his loving sons Tony, Billy, Davie and Mark, daughters Mary, Sadie, Concepta and Lorraine, sister Lillian, brother Davie, grandchildren, great grandchildren, in-laws, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
