Ros final to go ahead after pearses appeal is thrown out

The Roscommon SFC final goes ahead as planned tomorrow (Sunday) – after an appeal by Padraig Pearses over their semi-final defeat was rejected by the Connacht Council.

Padraig Pearses appealed the result of their semi-final loss against St Faithleach’s to the Connacht Council’s Hearing Committee.

The club argued that referee Michael Brehony was wrong in disallowing a late equalising ‘point’ by Niall Daly. St Faithleach’s won that controversial semi-final on a scoreline of 0-9 to 1-5. The referee had to be escorted from the field amid heated scenes after the final whistle.

Having had their appeal rejected by the Connacht Council last Wednesday night, Pearses opted not to take their case to the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA).

And so Sunday’s decider between St Brigid’s St Faithleach’s goes ahead as scheduled at Dr Hyde Park (throw-in: 3.30pm).

St Brigid’s are seeking their fifth title in succession, while the Ballyleague side won their only senior crown 49 years ago.

Padraig Kelly of St Brigid’s won another Roscommon senior hurling medal with Four Roads when they defeated Athleague in last Sunday’s county final (3-11 to 0-11). Now he’s aiming to add another football medal to his collection.

Interestingly, the St Faithleach’s manager is former Clann na nGael and Roscommon star Enon Gavin.

The senior final will be preceded by the MFC Division 1 final between holders Clann na nGael and local rivals St Brigid’s (throw-in: 1.30pm).
