Ten up for Moate Boxing Club

Gary Molloy brought the title count into double figures when he secured the tenth All-Ireland title for Moate boxing club this season. Boxing at 51kg Molloy ran out an 8-4 winner over Chris Phelan (Ryston). Phelan and his coaches had done their homework on Molloy and tried to turn the bout into a brawl. This tactic while keeping the scores close and forcing Molloy to adapt would ultimately cost Phelan the contest as the two public warnings he received accounted for the score difference at the finish. Having already secured the U21 and Intermediate titles, the danger was that Molloy would assume the under eighteen title should be his by right but, thankfully, Gary Molloy does not think that way and the concentration and respect he showed Phelan was the key to his eventual victory. It has been suggested that this was the most difficult of the three finals that Molloy has won, ironic when one considers that this is the only class where he was up against his own age group. The new champion does not have much time to savour this victory as he is back in high performance training next weekend to prepare for an International Youth Round Robin tournament in Dublin.
