Athlone RSC to host soccer tournament

Summer Soccer is back and the "Westmeath Independent" has again teamed up with Athlone Regional Sports Centre for the biggest six a side soccer tournament in the Midlands with a top cash prize of €1,000 to the winners. There will also be cash prizes for the runners-up, 3rd place team and the winners of the Plate competition. Colm Sammon is the League Co-ordinator again this year and he has the responsibility of ensuring that everything goes smoothly. He explains: 'The competition is along the lines of last years which was a huge success. Therefore we have decided to stick with the same formula. The competition itself commences on the week beginning Monday 15th June. Teams can have choice of playing on a Monday or Wednesday night between 7pm and 9pm. Teams will be divided into four groups with the top teams in each group going through to the quarter-finals. The two teams that finish bottom of their groups will go into the plate competition.' Teams can enter a panel of 10 players and as entry fee is only €100, this works out as €10 per person (see application form on this page, right). As well as the cash prizes, there will be other awards such as Player of the Tournament, Top Scorer etc. Teams should also specify if they have a preference for the Monday or Wednesday nights. Due to limited places available, early entry is advisable to guarantee a place. The competition will run for 9 weeks and will be officiated by official FAI referees.
