Woman seriously injured in Willow Park attack

A woman is recovering in hospital today (Wednesday) after receiving serious head injuries in an attack in the Willow Park area yesterday morning. The woman, who is in her twenties, was attacked at about 8am. It is understood a weapon was used in the attack and the woman was brought to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, where she was undergoing treatment yesterday afternoon for what were described as serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. It is believed the woman received a laceration to her head that required stitches and may also have been suffering from concussion. X-rays were to be taken to ascertain whether or not she had suffered a fracture to her skull. It was the second attack in the Willow Park area in a 24-hour period, with a teenage male assaulted in the area on Monday night. He was also hospitalised as a result of his injuries, which were not life-threatening. Two men, both in their twenties and from the locality, were arrested yesterday in relation to both assaults and were detained for questioning at Athlone Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. At the time of going to print they remained in Garda custody as officers continued to question them. Separately, Gardai are seeking witnesses to a car accident in the Monksland area on Saturday afternoon that resulted in the hospitalisation of a six-year-old girl, who suffered from serious hip and leg injuries. The young girl was sitting on a wall in the Corran Riada housing estate at about 1pm on Saturday when she was hit by a car. She was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe for treatment.
