Ballymahon woman drumming her way to the Olympics

A former Athlone IT student and local musician has described being chosen to perform at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics later this Summer as a "dream come true". Drummer Grainne Kavanagh, from Clonard, Ballymahon, will take her place among a cast of thousands for the UK's biggest ever live show on July 27 next, signalling the start of the biggest sporting event of the year. With less than three months to go, an excited Grainne told the Westmeath Independent this week that she is already looking forward to the prospect of such a high profile performance and expects a hectic schedule of rehearsals in the run-up to the event. "I can't wait. It's an honour and privilege to be included. It'll be all go until then," the 24-year-old, who is studying a Diploma in Music Performance at the Tech Music School in London, enthused.
