Westmeath Olympic Heroes to Receive Warm Homecoming

Olympians John Joe Nevin and Joseph Murphy. are set for a heroes' return to their home county next Monday (August 13)... Westmeath Local Authorities have today announced the following homecoming arrangements on the return of the Olympic pair.. A parade through Mullingar, with the Olympians on an open-top bus, will take place on Monday evening from Patrick Street to Cusack Park (in Mullingar), where entertainment will be provided, with gates opening at 6.30pm and the formal homecoming ceremony taking place at 7.30pm. The Cusack Park venue has been selected to cater for the expected large attendance and to provide optimum visibility for all attending the ceremony. To facilitate the event, parking will be free in Mullingar on Monday from 4pm. At time of going press, Nevin was due in the ring to fight Cuba's Lazaro Alvarez Estrada in the semi-finals of the bantamweight division. Prior to the fight, Nevin was already guaranteeda medal. Murphy also performed extremely well at the Olympics, helping Ireland's Eventing team finish fifth. Both men are assured of a heroes' welcome in Mullingar next Monday.
