Des Newton ... who has stepped down as Roscommon senior football manager.

Rossies looking for new manager after Newton steps down

Roscommon are looking for a new senior football manager after Des Newton stepped down last night (Tuesday, September 11). Newton has been completed just one season at the helm, having succeeded Fergal O'Donnell. Roscommon failed to earn promotion from Division 3 of the Allianz Football League and then suffered a heavy defeat to Galway in the Connacht championship. However, they redeemed themselves with a surprise All-Ireland Qualifiers win over Armagh in the All-Ireland Qualifiers. The Rossies then exited the championship with a defeat at the hands of Tyrone. Having competed well against Tyrone in the first half, Roscommon offered meek resistance in the second period and Mickey Harte's side ran out comfortable winners. A statement from the Roscommon County last night said: "Des Newton has informed Roscommon GAA County Board of his decision to step down as Manager of the Roscommon Senior Football Team. The Board would like to acknowledge the contribution of Des and his Management Team and wish them well in the future." "The Board will meet next week to discuss the process of appointing his successor," the statement added. Early speculation has suggested that Nigel Dineen - who led Roscommon to the All-Ireland U-21 final earlier this year - could now into contention for the job of senior manager.
