Starlight Kidz, a local performing arts group have secured a place in the prestigious Minitops final. The final will take place on Saturday, May 4 in St Patricks College, Drumcondra, Dublin.
After working their way through the heats and winning a coveted place in the national semi - finals Starlight performed last Saturday night, with over 300 supporters from Athlone coming to Dublin to cheer them on.
The atmosphere was electric as Starlight waited to hear their fate. When the finalists were announched the roof lifted off St Pats as parents, supporters and members alike celebrated when Starlight Kidz were announced as finalists.
The competition is based on the John Player Tops of old and consists of an hour long Variety show.
Starlight's entry this year is a spell binding mix  of song, music, dance, comedy, drama and colour with over 100 members working hard to entertain the audience and the all important adjudicators.
The group bring us to the 60's, back to the 1800's and feature a brillant tribute to Shirley Temple with the group of four to seven year olds tap dancing. They also take audiences on a journey through Egypt with a stunning satire on our 'broken' economy to the music from Caberet, the musical.
The group will also perform comedy sketches and a simply stunning finale which includes songs from the Phantom, A Chorus Line and Flashdance.
With praise aplenty from the adjudicators hopes are high for the bank holiday weekend where Starlight Kidz fly the flag for Athlone and the Midlands at the Minitops 2013 finale.
