Good Vibrations at Athlone Film Club

Athlone Film Club will continue its new season this evening (Tuesday) when the uplifting Irish film, Good Vibrations, is screened at 8pm in the Dean Crowe Theatre.

The film, which will appeal to movie and music lovers alike, chronicles the story of Terri Hooley, a radical, a rebel and a music-lover in 1970s Belfast, when the bloody conflict known as the Troubles shuts down the city. 

As all his friends take sides and take up arms, Terri opens a record shop on the most bombed half-mile in Europe and calls it Good Vibrations.

Through it he discovers a compelling voice of resistance in the city’s nascent underground punk scene.

Galvanising the young musicians into action, he becomes the unlikely leader of a motley band of kids and punks who join him in his mission to create a new community, an alternative Ulster, to bring his city back to life.

Backed by a fantastic soundtrack, and a great cast of Irish actors, Good Vibrations is a must-see Irish film.

A charming, uplifting alternative to the usual bleak portrayal of ’70s Belfast, Good Vibrations is a skilfully assembled film that really showcases a fantastic cast.

The music is utilised perfectly and gives an exciting lift to the film, to the point where you’ll be bopping in your seat.

For the most part the plot avoids the Cinematic Underdog clichés and just works perfectly as a warm tribute to an extraordinary man.
