Roddy Collins is out of the frame to manage Athlone next season.

Roddy Collins out of Athlone Town manager race

ATHLONE Town’s title winning manager Roddy Collins has today (Wednesday) issued a statement to the Westmeath Independent to announce his intention to step aside in the race to manage the club in the 2014 Airtricity League Premier Division.

Collins guided the Town to the First Division title last season and promotion to the top-flight.

Roddy's statement reads as follows:

“I have enjoyed a tremendous season at Athlone Town culminating in winning the Airtricity League and gaining promotion to the Premier Division.

In recent weeks the position of first team manager has been advertised and it is my understanding that interviews are scheduled to take place on Friday next, November 15th 2013.

I was obviously surprised at the course of action, considering the success we achieved and the platform created for next season in the top flight.

I have therefore reluctantly decided that the most honourable course of action in the interests of the club, myself and my family is to step aside and allow a new management team the opportunity to progress the fortunes of the first team for the season ahead.

The players, committee and most of all the supporters were a shining example and the journey we shared will always stay with me.

I want to thank everyone associated with this famous club for their support and loyalty. I would like to wish the new manager every success and I hope Athlone Town Football Club continues to thrive in the years to come.

Yours in sport
