Tommy Warburton in action for Castledaly ... he's a member of the New York football squad.

Westmeath pair in New York panel for Mayo clash

By Kieran Galvin

Westmeath duo Tommy Warburton and Keith Scally are part of the New York squad for this Sunday's Connacht SFC clash against Mayo.

Scally of Tyrrellspass has been selected at right half-back, while Castledaly's Warburton is included among the substitutes.

Interestingly, Warburton scored a vital goal for Castledaly against Scally's club in the 2008 Westmeath SFC semi-finals. Castledaly went on to win their first-ever Westmeath senior football title that year.

In 2007, it was Scally who struck for a crucial goal, finding the net in the county final against Mullingar Shamrocks as Tyrrellspass retained the Flanagan Cup.

Tommy has represented Westmeath at underage and senior level; his younger brother, John is part of the current Castledaly senior panel.

Mike Stones from Kilbeggan is a selector with the New York team, while Jason Kelly from Shannonbridge has been selected at centre-forward.

On Sunday, New York face a daunting task against Mayo, who were All-Ireland finalists in 2013 and 2012.

The captain of the New York team is talented midfielder Brendan Quigley, a man who has often starred in the colours of his native Laois. Other players of note in the New York team are Donegal's Ross Wherity and Cork's Denis O'Sullivan.

Sunday's game at Gaelic Park in The Bronx will throw in at 7.30pm Irish time (2.30pm NY time) and it is the first game in the 2014 All-Ireland SFC.
