“Jobs and investment into this county is key. The government has to deliver for the west of Ireland. While things are improving in Dublin, we haven’t seen those benefits particularly in the midlands and west. While we have seen some job creation in the Monksland area, we need to see that on a wider basis throughout the county of Roscommon.”

No-one elected on the second count. Hudson has now been eliminated. Hudson’s votes (155) now being distributed in count 3.

John Naughten (FG) is now just 90 votes off the quota after the second count and is likely to take the third seat. Tony Ward (Ind) and Ivan Connaughton (FF) took the first and second seats in the early hours of this morning. Naughten is on 1298 (Quota = 1388). Gordon Hudson (Ind) has been eliminated and his votes are now being distributed. There are six seats in this electoral area and the counting continues.

The first two seats in the Athlone electoral area of Roscommon County Council were filled at 12.50am. Independent Councillor Tony Ward took the first seat, while newcomer Ivan Connaughton (FF) took the second seat. Both reached the quota of 1,388.

Counting will resume at 10 o'clock this morning, when Ward's surplus of 324 votes will be distributed.

The remaining seats are likely to be filled by John Naughten (FG), John Keogh (FF), Laurence Fallon (Ind) and Paddy Kilduff, with sitting Councillor Ollie Moore (FG) expected to out.
