Over 4,000 students begin exams

Just under 3,000 students are sitting down to exams in Westmeath today, while more than 1,100 are doing the same in Roscommon.

A total of 1,579 are registered to sit Leaving Cert, LCVP and Leaving Cert Applied exams in Westmeath, while the corresponding figure in Roscommon is 583. The Leaving Cert kicks off today with English paper one and Home Economics. Junior Cert students meanwhile, including 1,378 in Westmeath and 591 in Roscommon, are facing two English papers.
Nationwide a total of 118, 673 candidates are registered to sit exams in almost 5,000 examination centres countrywide this year. Junior Cert candidates account for 60,698 of that number, with slightly fewer registered for Leaving Cert exams.
In both Westmeath and Roscommon there are slightly more males registered to sit the exams than females.
Speaking about this year’s exams, chairman of the State Examinations Commission (SEC) Richard Langford described them as “an integral part of growing up in Ireland”.
Exams for the remainder of this week include Engineering and English paper two tomorrow (Thursday) and Geography and Maths paper one on Friday for Leaving Cert students. Junior Cert candidates face two Irish papers tomorrow, and Geography and Maths papers on Friday.
The results of the Leaving Cert exams will be available on August 13, while Junior Cert results will be made available in mid-September.
