Athlone u21s knockout out tubberclair to meet garrycastle in final

Athlone’s reign as Westmeath U21 football champions was ended last Tuesday night when they were edged out by Mullingar Shamrocks in their quarter-final clash at Springfield (final score: 0-17 to 2-10).

Athlone were missing several players on the night and it was another heartbreaking one-point loss for the club, following the senior team’s 3-9 to 3-8 defeat to Bunbrosna, which has left them facing the SFC relegation play-off.

Luke Dully and Richie Greene scored the Athlone goals in the U21 encounter, but Shamrocks prevailed by the minimum margin .

However, Tubberclair went on to defeat Mullingar Shamrocks in their semi-final clash (15-a-side) last Thursday night. That has set up a local derby county final against Garrycastle, who defeated Maryland/Tang in the other semi-final recently.

The Tubberclair v Garrycastle U21 county final is due to take place on Friday, September 12 in Pairc Chiarain, Athlone (7pm).

Castledaly and Killucan will contest the 13-a-side U21 FC final. Castledaly defeated Shandonagh in the semi-finals, with Killucan getting the better of Tyrrellspass in the other  last four clash.

Venue change for SFC play-off

The Westmeath SFC play-off between Garrycastle and St Malachy’s will now take place in Tubberclair this Wednesday night (September 3) and NOT in Moate, which had been listed as the venue.

The throw-in time remains 7pm and extra-time will be played in the event of a draw. There was some surprise over the original fixture as it was felt that fading light may have been an issue. With the floodlights in Tubberclair, the change is a sensible one

The winners will advance to a meeting with Killucan in the quarter-finals while the losers will bow out of the championship. The quarter-final between Killucan and either Garrycastle or St Malachy’s is due to take place at Cusack Park on Sunday at 6.30pm.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Westmeath SFC relegation play-off between Athlone and Castledaly will take place in Moate on Sunday, September at 2pm. It will be preceded by the IFC relegation play-off between Ballinagore and the Mullingar Shamrocks ‘B’ team.
