Eleven candidates to contest roscommon byelection

Four candidates from the country's main political parties will be joined by seven Independents in contesting next month's by-election in Roscommon - South Leitrim.

Noon today (Thursday) was the candidate nomination deadline for the vote on October 10. Candidate nominations can withdraw up to noon tomorrow.

The by-election will fill the Dail vacancy created by the election of former Independent TD Luke 'Ming' Flanagan to the European Parliament.

The candidates are as follows:

* Ivan Connaughton (Fianna Fail), Main Street, Athleague, Co. Roscommon.

* John McDermott (Independent), Bohergarve, Roscommon.

* Maura Hopkins (Fine Gael), Edmonstown, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon.

* Michael Fitzmaurice (Independent), Strangeforth, Williamstown, Via Castlerea, Co Galway.

* Tom Crosby (Independent), Ballytoohey, Tarmonbarry, Co Roscommon.

* Denis O'Brien (Independent), Killarcan, Leitrim Village, Co Leitrim.

* Martin Kenny (Sinn Fein), Cloonsarn, Aughavas, Co Leitrim.

* Emmett Corcoran (Independent), Strokestown, Co Roscommon

* Gerry O'Boyle (Independent), Main Street, Castlerea, Co Roscommon.

* Des Guckian (Independent), Derrywillow, Dromod, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim.

* John Kelly (Labour), The Avenue, Castlemore, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon.
