Smoking hot former westmeath hurler features on second captains live

When Westmeath hurler Declan Gillen had a sneaky fag while on the bench during the county’s Leinster championship drubbing against Kilkenny in 1989, little did he think that it would come back to haunt him over a quarter of century later.

The Cullion stalwart recently became the second inductee into the 'Irish Sports Smoking Hall of Shame' on RTE show 'Second Captains Live'.

Gillen, who was only sporting one boot, and two of his fellow subs were sitting on top of the dugout at O'Connor Park in Tullamore when the TV camera caught him smoking.

According to Second Captain's Live presenter Ken Earley, Gillen told a researcher that he wasn't the only sub that day to light up but that the other smoker 'was a cute farmer and he was smoking it in his fist'.

The game itself was a one sided affair with Kilkenny running out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-29 to 3-5.
