Winter wonderland planned for Athlone's Civic Square

Athlone Civic Square is set to transformed into a winter wonderland for the first time with the introduction of a new Christmas Street Market planned on December 22 and 23.

Speaking following the launch of the event, Cllr Frankie Keena said the provision of this two-day market in the square in conjunction with the Christmas lights display in this area will create a festive atmosphere that should not be missed.

The market will be a hive of activity with lots of entertainment for all ages with up to 40 high quality market stalls offering a variety of excellent products, all in keeping with the Christmas festive theme.

Santa’s grotto will be a massive attraction for children. Other activities include an outdoor cinema, carol singing and festive music.

'I would like to thank Westmeath County Council, Athlone Chamber, The Prince of Wales Hotel, The Fatted Calf Restaurant and Burgess of Athlone and other busineses for their kind financial contribution and support to make this Christmas market become a reality,' said Cllr Keena.

John McGrath, President of Athlone Chamber of Commerce, added: “Following a very successful turning on of the Christmas lights by the Mayor Clr John Dolan and special guests at Athlone Castle, where Carmel Duffy coordinated a great start to the Christmas activities in Athlone, we at Athlone Chamber are happy to be involved with the Christmas Market.

'Athlone is a large provincial urban centre and a market of this nature is definitely in demand. It is great to see the local authority, the chamber and businesses working together to great a Christmas atmosphere in Count John McCormack Square.'

Padraic Whelan, Manager of the Prince of Wales Hotel said they 'are delighted to be part of bringing the first of many Christmas markets to the Civic Square. Hopefully, this will be supported very strongly and people will see the benefits of staying in our town and using the civic square for what it should be used for on a regular basis.’’

The members of the Athlone Christmas Market committee are John McGrath, Athlone Chamber, Cllr Frankie Keena, Padraic Whelan, Prince of Wales, Feargal O’Donnell from The Fatted Calf and Alistair Gray, Burgess.
