Temperatures to plummet as 'wintry flurries' forecast

This morning (Wednesday) was bitterly cold in the Midlands, but temperatures are set to plummet even further throughout the rest of the week.

Met Eireann is forecasting sub-zero temperatures and 'wintry flurries' as the weekend draws near.

Tomorrow (Thursday) will be windy and very cold, with top temperatures of just 4 to 9 degrees nationally. It will feel 'much colder' in the blustery southeasterly wind.

Overnight temperatures on Thursday will drop to minus three degrees in the Midlands, with a hard frost and some icy patches expected.

Friday will again feel 'bitterly cold' with temperatures of just 4 to 7 degrees during the day.

Some 'light showers or wintry flurries' are forecast in eastern and southeastern areas of the country, according to the national meteorological service.

Friday night will be extremely cold with temperatures of zero to minus four degrees bringing 'a hard frost and some icy patches.'

A similar pattern will continue on Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures staying in the single digits during the day and dropping below freezing at night.

Further 'wintry flurries' are also possible during the course of the weekend.
