'Lonely bouquets' to be adopted this Sunday

If you're in Athlone this weekend, keep your eyes peeled as there's a chance you might come across a random gift of flowers.

Sunday is 'International Lonely Bouquet Day' - an initiative which was started by a lady in Belgium several years ago.

Lorna Stuart Trainor of Athlone's 'A Room In Bloom' has been taking part in recent years and will do so again this weekend.

Lorna will be leaving flower arrangements with tags that read “adopt me, I'm a lonely bouquet†in various locations around town. If you come across one you are invited to keep it or pass it on to a loved one.

She is also suggesting that other local people get involved this year by leaving out some 'lonely bouquets' from their own garden to help brighten up someone's day.

“We have had some lovely stories. One lady who found one said it was her son's anniversary - he had passed away a few years earlier - so she really appreciated the flowers on that day. Other people found them and delivered them to their grannies,†Lorna told the Westmeath Independent.

She said details of the lonely bouquets would be shared by A Room In Bloom on social media and would also be posted on the official Lonely Bouquet website (lonelybouquet.com)

“If people find them, we ask them to tag us on social media and let us know,†she explained.

The bouquets are generally left in well-populated areas. Places where people might come across them on Sunday include lifts, benches, coffee tables, or beside parking meters.
