Work to start within weeks on new Athlone Garda Station

Work on the long-delayed redevelopment of Athlone Garda Station is finally set to begin in mid-May after contracts for the €8.8 million project were signed this morning (Friday).

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan and Minister of State Kevin 'Boxer' Moran announced details of the project at the station on Barrack Street.

Sligo-based firm Kilcawley Construction has been appointed as contractor for the project, which is due to be completed in two years' time.

The work will involve the restoration and refurbishment of both the Garda station building and the former social protection building next door.

The former social protection building will be refurbished first and then Gardai will move into it while work is carried out on the current Garda station building.

The final phase of the project will see the construction of a new 'link building' between the two existing buildings.
