Another night of water restrictions for Athlone

Athlone is to be hit with further water restrictions tonight (Thursday).

Water supplies will be cut off to a number of areas from 10pm tonight until 6am tomorrow morning (Friday) according to a statement from Irish Water and Westmeath County Council today.

Supply interruptions have been happening several times a week in the town and surrounding areas for some time now.

Irish Water say the restriction is necessary “in order to allow water levels to recover in the Annagh Reservoir following a mechanical failure at the water treatment plant”.

Customers in the following areas will be affected by tonight's restriction: Athlone Town, Baylin, Mount Temple, The Ories, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Blyry, Killyon Hill, Bonavalley, Athlone and surrounds in County Westmeath.

According to the statement, “this necessary night-time restriction is being put in place to ensure customers have a water supply to their homes and businesses during the daytime. This action is being taken to ensure that there is an adequate quantity of water available to supply industries, schools, residences and commercial activities during business hours.

The water supply will restore to customers as the network refills. It can take a number of hours for the water to restore to customers on higher ground or at the end of the network once the water supply is turned back on. We expect that supply will return to customers between 6 am and 8am as the water returns to the network.”
