Athlone Sub-Aqua Club has confirmed a body was recovered from the Shannon on Sunday morning.

A body has been recovered from the Shannon by local rescue services.

In a statement, Athlone Sub Aqua Club confirmed that a person was recovered from the river on Monday morning, approximately 600m from the weir wall. 

The club extended their sympathies to the family of the deceased.

Athlone Sub-Aqua Club has now stood down their search teams. The club had coordinated over-water and underwater searches since the report was received of the person entering the water on October 15.

Athlone Sub-Aqua Club thanked the following organisations who assisted in the search: Athlone Anglers, Roscommon Civil Defence, Mullingar Sub-Aqua club, Roscommon Sub-Aqua club, Longford Scuba divers, Lough Ree Sub-Aqua Club, Shannonside Snorkellers, Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran and his staff, Garda Water Unit and Waterways Ireland.

The club also paid tribute to the various business in Athlone who offered their services and refreshments to the search volunteers.
