€780,000 windfall for Westmeath sports clubs

Sports clubs and organisations across Westmeath received a welcome boost this morning, with the news that more than €780,000 in Sports Capital Grant funding is to be shared across the county.

The grants were announced by the Minister with special responsibility for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin.

Several organisations in the Athlone area are to benefit from funding: Athlone GAA Club has been allocated almost €23,000, while Garrycastle GAA is to receive almost €14,000, and Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí just over €14,000.

Caulry GAA will benefit from funding of €29,500, while Rosemount GAA will receive almost €39,000, Maryland GAA Club €38,825, and Moate Golf Club €26,000.

Welcoming the allocations, Minister Kevin 'Boxer' Moran congratulated the clubs who had been successful in receiving grants.

I want to congratulate and say well done to all the volunteers who have made the applications on behalf of their communities and who were successful. Sport plays an integral role in our communities up and down the country and no less than in Westmeath.”

He added that a review of all aspects of the 2018 round of the programme will now be undertaken and it is expected that a new round will open for applications in the coming months.

Deputy Peter Burke said the larger grants will go a long way to upgrade and promote our sports clubs which “do fantastic work to engage both young and old in all manner of sports in our communities”.

However, I am fully aware that some clubs are disappointed and it is vital we get feedback on these applications to assist us next year... I have already been in contact with Minister Brendan Griffin and Minister Shane Ross to see where unsuccessful clubs fell short and how we can modify applications next year to make sure no club is overlooked and everyone gets their fair share.”

Senator Maura Hopkins also welcomed more then €450,000 in allocations for clubs across Roscommon, including almost €24,000 for Clonown Community Ltd and €28,000 for Skyvalley Rovers.

She said, “It is vital that we support our local clubs and teams in the great work they do and these sports capital grants are essential in supporting this work in our communities.”
