Resurfacing works complete on Northgate Street

Road resurfacing work which was taking place at night on Northgate Street in Athlone has now been completed, according to a council representative.

The Westmeath Independent was contacted by a resident of the street early last week who said the road works were taking place there between 10pm and 3.30am and that residents had not been given any advance notice that this night-time work would be happening.

Jackie Finney, manager of the Athlone Municipal District, said it was generally the policy of the local authority to notify business owners of works taking place during the day and to let residents know of works happening at night. She said she would "take it on board" if that hadn't happened in this instance.

Ms Finney said the road resurfacing on Northgate Street was completed on Thursday last and that some work to widen the footpaths on the street was still ongoing.

She added that there would be some "re-tarring" of the road surface between Custume Place and the town bridge early in the new year, and that this may require some night-time work to be carried out.
