More water cuts for Athlone tonight

Water restrictions will be in place in many parts of Athlone overnight as a result of a mechanical breakdown at the town's water treatment plant.

Irish Water and Westmeath County Council have advised householders in Athlone Town, Baylin, Mount Temple, The Ories, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Blyry, Killyon Hill, Bonavalley and surrounding areas that restrictions in their water supply will be in place from 10pm tonight ( Wednesday, 11 Dec) until 6am tomorrow morning (Thursday,12 Dec) to allow for water levels in the Annagh Reservoir to recover.

The water supply will be restored to customers as the network refills from 6am, but the water utility company have warned that it may take “a number of hours” for water to be restored to customers on higher ground or at the end of the network. However, they expect to have supply restored between 6am and 8am tomorrow morning as the water returns to the network.

Irish Water say the water restrictions are necessary following the completion of urgent repairs at the Athlone Water Treatment Plant after a mechanical breakdown occurred at the plant late yesterday evening.

While the majority of Irish Water customers in Athlone have had their water supply restored today, customers in the village of Mount Temple may continue to experience disruption throughout the day. An alternative water supply is to be provided to the village for the period of the disruption, but Irish Water have advised all customers to boil water from tankers/containers prior to use.
