Athlone Mayor compiles local Covid-19 database

In response to the rapidly escalating number of confirmed cases of Covid-19, Athlone Mayor Frankie Keena has taken a pro-active approach by collating a database of local individuals and organisations, and their capabilities which he has sent to the HSE.

Cllr Keena set up the database as a result of what he described as the “numerous calls and texts” he has received from people offering to help out in the marathon effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

“These people and organisations will be called upon by the HSE as backup if needed over the coming days and weeks” said Cllr Keena, who expressed his gratitude to all those who have already volunteered their services and continue to do so.

The database is in addition to the Covid Community Response initiative which was set up with the aim of coordinating on-going national and local community initiatives in the fight against Covid-19. The group, who are based in Galway, have been standardising communications and campaigns around the huge nationwide voluntary effort to assist the elderly and vulnerable during this time of crisis.

The Athlone Mayor has also welcomed news that An Garda Siochana have hired a fleet of extra vehicles to assist as a community response for those in need.

“Everybody needs to work together in a careful and responsible way, and please take care” said Cllr Keena, who has asked that anyone wishing to have their names and skills added to the database he has compiled to contact him via Facebook in the coming days.
