Update on when testing can recommence due shortly

Testing of people for COVID-19 has not taken place at St Vincent’s Athlone for several days, the Westmeath Independent has learned.

The centre which opened two weeks ago has not been able to take people for testing since last week.

It’s understood to be due to a shortage of testing kit and equipment.

In a statement to Westmeath Independent, the HSE said: “As indicated previously laboratories are experiencing challenges in terms of securing supplies of reagent for testing.

“As referenced in international media this is a global problem with major suppliers having to ration supplies across the world.

“We continue to prioritise testing of healthcare workers and in-patients in acute hospitals and residential facilities.”

The HSE added that they wish to apologise to all those waiting for test results and wish to assure the public that they are making every endeavour to improve turnaround times within the current international constraints.

They added that they are currently exploring the procurement of reagent from international sources.

An update on when testing can recommence in St Vincent’s in Athlone is due over the weekend or early next week.
