Duffy looking forward to first game with Athlone

Navan man Lee Duffy has signed for Athlone Town who take on Wexford tonight as the League of Ireland resumes.

Duffy will bring plenty of experience to the side having previously played for Shelbourne, Drogheda, Longford Town and Wexford.

He returned to Drogheda for a second spell after which he moved to Northern Ireland where he played with Warren Point and Newry City.

"I’m absolutely delighted to have signed for Athlone Town AFC as I have been training with the lads for the past few weeks and that has made the decision to sign with the club very easy," said Duffy after completing his signing.

"I can’t wait to get going on Friday and I’m looking forward to getting back out on the pitch and having a good season," he added.

Last March Duffy revealed he had been hospitalised for eight days after contracting the Covid-19 virus.

On his Twitter account in March he outlined how he was unable to breathe without the aid of a ventilator. Duffy (28) ended his message by warning the public against taking the pandemic "lightly".

"As some of you may or may not know, I tested positive for Covid-19 two weeks ago.

"I spent eight days in hospital hooked up to oxygen as I could no longer breathe on my own, scared not knowing what was going to happen.

"Luckily I got through it and I'm starting to feel a lot better now."

"My advice to everybody is to not take this lightly, it is very serious."
