A timeline for the development of the proposed Athlone to Galway cycleway has also been revealed as part of public consultation held this week.

A public consultation on route corridor options will commence later this year.

A preferred route corridor public consultation is planned for the middle of 2021 and detailed consultations with individual landowners from the middle of 2021 onwards.

Preliminary design work may commence in 2021/2022 with the plan being to submit an application for planning approval to An Bord Pleanala in the first quarter of 2023 with a design due by the third quarter.

Public consultation had been ongoing all this week on the restart of plans for the Athlone to Galway Greenway project.

The public consultations began on Monday with an event in Athlone's Shamrock Lodge Hotel and has continued in Ballinasloe, Athenry, Loughrea and today in Oranmore.

Plans for the Athlone to Galway section, which would complete the Dublin to Galway Greenway, were "paused" in 2015 after strong objections were voiced by farmers and other landowners who would have been impacted, particularly in East Galway.

Within the last year, a dedicated office for the project was established on Society Street in Ballinasloe.
