Gardai investigating attempted burglary of Athlone jewellers

Gardai have appealed for information from the public after an attempted burglary at a jewellery store in Athlone's Golden Island Shopping Centre last weekend.

Intruders tried to carry out the raid at Park Jewellers during the early hours of Saturday morning last, August 22.

The same business previously suffered the loss of €250,000 worth of jewellery during an audacious heist in which thieves cut a hole in the roof of the shopping centre to gain entry amid a severe snowstorm in March 2018.

Last weekend's incident bore some similarity, in that the intruders again gained entry through the roof, but this time they left the premises empty-handed after activating an alarm.

Gardai are now reviewing CCTV footage from the locality last Friday night and into Saturday. They are seeking information from anyone who noticed anything suspicious from approximately 10pm on Friday to 4am on Saturday.

"If people noticed anything in the Golden Island or Irishtown area we would ask them to contact the detective branch here in Athlone Garda Station," said Sergeant John Gallagher.

Athlone Garda Station can be reached at: 09064 98550.
