One-way system proposed for west side street

A one way-system for a street on the Connaught side of Athlone has been proposed by a car parking sub-committee of the council.

Reducing traffic on Patrick Street to one way was just one of five recommendations from the group to come before last Monday's monthly meeting, all of which were approved to progress by councillors.

District Manager Jackie Finney told members that the committee's recommendations arising out of the meeting on September 17 last included the introduction of a one-way system on Patrick Street, that's the street which starts at the side of Maguire's pub, and the amending of the road layout on nearby Ballalley Lane to facilitate a footpath, both of which will require public consultation.

A drawing was also circulated to councillors to show provision for an extra loading bay adjacent to SuperValu in Moate to operate from 6am to 10am daily before reverting to parking thereafter.

The other recommendations covered the provision of a yellow box towards the rear of St Patrick's Terrace and putting in double yellow lines at access points to Athlone Marina subject to Garda agreement. It's understood the three latter measures do not require public consultation to progress.

All of the above recommendations were approved by a proposer and seconder at the October Athlone-Moate Municipal District meeting.
